canon Canon Scanner Quality Information for The Picky

I was nervous buying this to scan 750 plus slides. There is a cover on the inside lid, which has to be removed in order to scan slides. The instructions mention nothing about this, and I had to call customer service. The scan quality at 4800 dpi is very good, and it seemed to be very accurate in colour and tone. Most of the slide scanning services only will scan up to about 600 dpi, and I would like to have the option for a high resolution print, so I scanned each slide at the highest setting. This took several weeks. However, after 30 scans or so, it would fill up the memory and I would have to quit the application and restart it losing the recent scans and having to rescan. So, I would scan about 28 and then save them, quit the app, restart it and do 28 more. However, about 28 is all I could do per day, because the repetition and waiting drove me nuts. I would find other things to do for 20 minutes and return to scan more, often losing track of time and what I was doing. But it saved me a lot of money over professional scanning services at 50 cents to a dollar per slide.

The photo scanning is okay, but with either method, a lot of retouching was needed as there was a shine to the photo, and a lot of flaws with the slides. I’m not sure what was dust on the glass bed and what wasn’t. iphoto will take the flaws out, and I won’t want to print each photo anyway, but will touch up on an individual basis. I haven’t tried the negative scanning option yet, and I’m not sure what to expect. Overall, it worked fine, and I achieved what I wanted.

I am belong to old school folks and like to save articles from newspaper/magazines or paper documents that I may need to dig into later. Two major things I was looking for when I was researching a scanner: The scanned documents must be easily searchable, and the scanner should have a relatively fast speed. This scanner has very well served my needs. The scanned documents can easily saved as PDF file and I can simply use my Vista Window Explorer’s search feature to quickly locate the information that I look for, and the scanning process is fast and quiet. This scanner only uses one cable to hook up to computer, which makes it very easy to use. It also allows thick book scanning.

This scanner is all you need to reduce years of accumulated paper records. I’ve gotten rid of a whole box of stored files just since Christmas by using the one-touch pdf feature. The scanner is compact and simple to use. If you can plug a USB cord into your computer, you can be scanning in minutes. And the price is a great bargain. The few photos I’ve scanned through Photoshop have been excellent quality as well. As soon as I get through two more boxes of files, I’ll be hitting my stack of dust-gathering photo albums.

For the price, this scanner works very well for my needs. I basically needed it to scan catalog images and it does a very good job of doing this, with nice details.

I was replacing an Epson scanner that was no longer supported. The LIDE 700F has easy setup: simply install the CD and plug in the USB plug. XP instantly recognized the unit.
Copying, scanning are all either controlled by 1 button on the unit or “custom” adjustment from Canon Navigator icon on screen.
All very intuitive. Copy to email works very well to MS Outlook. No prob to save to file and attach to another provider.
Very lightweight – quality and speed of scans makes this an excellent buy.

Like this Canon Scanner. It’s very easy to install and use. The print quality is great for the price. I recommend this product

I wanted a low cost scanner for “shoebox” photos and random monthly statements. Size was also important. I also wanted better-than-average scan quality. This printer fits the bill for all the above. Slightly longer than a legal pad, only about 1 1/4″ high, light as a feather and only one cable(USB) to attach the footprint is perfect for small spaces. The only negative is the scan time is slow. Overall, I’m pleased with the purchase.

To be quiet honest I purchased this scanner at the insistance of my wife, who had been convinced that we needed it by our dauhter. Now I love both of these ladies dearly, but I tried to tell my wife that what little copying that we needed, we could get done at our bank, like we have been doing for years.

So the bottom line is, I bought the scanner, to appease my wife and daughter, even though we didn’t need it. When it arrived I took it out of the box. set it up, ran one thing, and printed it. To use it properly, I am going to have to adjust the size of the print, as the one I ran was too large.

Since the day I got it, and hooked it up, it has been sitting here beside me collecting dust, but my wife and daughter are happy.

This scanner is everything you want. It’s cheap and it does the job very well. One thing I’d like to add is if you have any documents you want to scan, I recommend scanning them on photo mode because it’s 100% clear. On document mode it is not and slightly faded and don’t see any reason to have that option. Another thing I noticed is by default it is set to 300dpi but there is a setting to change it to a max of 600dpi…well forget the 600dpi! it causes spots that you will end up spending an hour blotting out with Photoshop. If you switch it to color photo mode and leave all the other settings on default(300dpi) for scanning photos and documents that will give you the best results from my own experience. I am happy with this purchase.

I bought it for light use at home and it suits my needs perfectly. It’s no substitute for a high end scanner but it is neither meant, nor priced, to be. Worked right out of the box with my aging Mac.

Jenson March 9, 2010 at 11:42 am

The 3 buttons on this scanner are never used as I crop, adjust, etc. before printing, as for the scanner itself working great after one year and is used often, for the price a great deal. Next time (if every) I will upgrade for one without button, Every thing I have is a cannon as I have good luck with them. 4 stars is just about right

Great scanner, small but very sharp. They may have made updates but when I bought this the software would not work with Windows 7. I was an easy fix though to go to the Cannon web site and download the fix.

Kevorkian March 10, 2010 at 11:44 am

When it works it works fine. But after a few scans the thing tries to calibrate itself and usually fails, telling you to follow the instructions in the manual. I couldn’t find these alleged instructions anywhere in the manual or Canon’s nearly useless website. Sometimes trying to scan again will eventually work, sometimes not. I had to scan a bunch of old pictures for a surprise party but this thing decided to quit on me halfway through the job. Best of luck to Canon if this is the junk they sell.

Hall March 10, 2010 at 11:30 pm

This scanner is great and takes up very little space. I like that it runs off the USB cable so no need to plug it into an outlet. It’s very easy to use!

Gainsworth March 11, 2010 at 11:26 am

The latest driver on the Canon site does NOT work on the latest OSX.
I had to go to the Europe Canon site and use the older 11.020 driver.
It does a good job of scanning for me. The colors are good. The speed is bearable for increased resolution.

Earll March 11, 2010 at 11:30 pm

I put 3 stars for Mac and Windows 7 compatible due to not being able to evaluate either one of them as I have windows xp home edition. Install went well. It took maybe 15 minutes with a restart and the scanner was up and running. Software was much different than Umax’s, but it is still very straight forward. I scanned a few black n white word documents and the front cover of a magazine. The scanned magazine picture looked identical to the original. The black n white documents looked great, just like a photo copy would look like. Best feature I like is the scanner turns itself on/off automatically when in use. The light bulb should last significantly longer than the Umax because of this.

I am very pleased with this scanner. Nothing is perfect, but this scanner is pretty close to perfect.

Cleary March 12, 2010 at 11:41 am

This is a great product. Installation was a snap, does an excellent job of scanning and is light weight. In short, just what I was looking for. ONE WORD OF CAUTION, a USB cable comes with the scanner so there is no need to purchase the 10′ cable that Amazon indicates “others who purchased this product also purchased” especially since it DOES NOT FIT THIS SCANNER!
